Start of the year began with multiple NSW club races...as this was our first race season we were not expecting too much results wise, as a new club...but in the end we achieved the following:
Jan 2013 Pasha Dasha Newcastle-Gold in open mixed 8km
Feb 2013 Port Hacking regatta-Gold in open mixed 8km/Silver in Novice 6km
March 2013 Cronulla regatta-Silver in open mixed 8km.
March 2013 NSW State Titles (run by Central Coast OCC)
-Gold in open mixed OC6 long course
-Gold in U19 womens OC1 short course
-Silver in Novice womens OC1 short course
-Gold in open womens OC1 short course
-Bronze in open mens OC1 long course
Nov 2013 Canberra Ice Dragons regatta-Gold in open mixed short course race
At the end of November 2013, some of our paddlers travelled over to the Vaka Eiva paddling festival in Rarotonga. We didnt come anywhere , but this regatta gave our novice paddlers a taste of ocean/changes racing...so much so, most of us will be going back again nxt year :)
Reflecting on 2013, we would like to say a big thank you to those that have helped us.
Big thank you goes out to Debbie and Kyeemagh RSL club. Their continued support of our club is greatly appreciated. If it wasnt for them we wouldnt have been able to get this club off the ground.
Also thank you to Mark Forbes and AOCRA for their continued support of our club. Subsidising the junior paddle kits has helped us out immensely in our quest to promote and grow our sport especially amongst kids. Thank you.
Simone and the girls from Koa Kai have graciously let us store one of our canoes on their site to allow us to run our junior sessions from Dolls point. Thanks guys! :)
Club wise we were blessed to attract coaches and paddlers with a huge amount of experience and expertise in Outrigger canoeing. I would like to thank Teura Raimoana, our resident Tahitian, for running a series of workshops teaching our paddlers skills in outrigger canoeing and water safety and for also taking our adult paddlers out during our Sunday sessions. He's an awesome paddler, crazy steerer, and we are proud to call you one of our own :)
Thank you also goes out to Bailey Bowyer who stood up and took our adult paddling sessions over the winter when I injured my shoulder "attempting" to ski...we are very lucky to have an open ocean paddler of her experience in our club..thank you! The guys loved your torture and awesome training sessions..we are lucky to have you sis.Thank you! :)
A mega thank you goes out to Hatoa Paul, an ex NZ champion paddler originally from Gisbourne, who singlehandedly has grown our juniors through his passion to grow the sport we love by nuturing and sharing his knowledge with our youth...thank you for all the work you have done with our kids, and all the work you have done on our equipment and canoes. Without you, I think our club may have fallen apart (literally) a long time ago! Thank you(and please dont go back to NZ)! :)
Last but not least, I am proud of our paddlers. Each and every one of you have brought a light and energy to our club, making us a club you should all be proud to be a part of. When I think back on 2013, all I see are smiles, laughs, inappropriate comments and jokes...and lots of heart...Its not just about competition, its about being part of our paddling whanau (family), not perfect, not by a long shot, but if we can all be there for each other, learn and grow as a club together, thats all we can ask for from each of you. As one of your coaches, I am continuely learning from each of YOU and am greatful for everything you are teaching me. Thank you for being part of the Maia OCC.
Merry Christmas and happy new year everybody. See some of you when sessions begin again on Mon 6th Jan 2014 for adults and Sat 11th Jan 2014 for Juniors.
