Over winter some of our existing paddlers continued training. Team Manuia mainly on the one man canoes and some of "the regulators" with Bailey on the six man canoes. Thank you to Bailey for stepping in and taking the bulk of trainings during winter. We also want to say a big thank you to Elaine and Sydney outrigger canoe club for allowing our paddlers to train with Elaine from Balmoral every Saturday in the lead up to Vaka Eiva. We really appreciate it. The guys heading to Vaka Eiva in November this year have improved immensely and thats all because of time on the water and your guidance :)
With the help of Koa Kai who have given us use of some of their equipment, and Maia coaches/paddlers running the sessions, we have started running junior paddle classes every Saturday morning from 9.30am to 12pm. They will run every Saturday morning from Dolls Point (end of Sanoni Ave Sandringham).
Our first session was last Saturday and we got 10 kids with their families come down and give waka ama a try. The parents themselves even had a go. Already I have had feedback that a few more kids will be coming down next week. If any one else is interested in coming down, we will be there this Saturday from 9.30am-12pm. BYO water, a change of clothes and towels. If you have kids between 8-20 years of age, we need a guardian or parent to sign a permission/indemnity form first before they are allowed to get on the canoes. First 3 sessions for adults are free. First 6 sessions for kids are free. So if any of you are interested, or know of any groups or families interested then let us know :)
NSW race season is upon us. We are trying to get a crew together to take down to the first race of the season in Canberra on the 2nd/3rd November. Having trouble finding a way to get our canoe down there unfortunately so we may have to wait until the next regatta (but am working on it as we speak..fingers crossed..). And as previously mentioned, some of us will be competing in the Vaka Eiva paddling festival in Rarotonga from 22-29th November...Iknow..some of us have it rough right!
Below is the latest NSW outrigger canoeing race season calender file. Each of the regatta's cater for paddlers of all ages and abilities..so if you are a novice paddler or an experienced one and want to get back into racing then let us or one of the clubs nearest to you know you are interested, get out there and get paddling!
